Speaking, Hosting, Auctioneering; with a bit of personality

Much of the job of hosting an event, to my mind, centres around keeping things moving at the desired tempo, while creating as much chemistry as possible with any interviewees or special guests who might join me on stage. Whether the aim is to garner insight, or to tee up laughs for the gathered masses, it’s a job I love every bit as much as I loved playing.

Anyone can stand and read a script, but that never feels terribly exciting or ambitious to me. To that end, I rather tend to lean towards a more natural, interactive approach to compèring.

Auctioneering is a role that I’ve come to love, too, mainly I think as so few people seem to realise how much fun you can have while extracting money for worthy causes from the very generous. Some of my favourite events have been auctions, because you just never know who’s in a room…
