Things I Do

I spent years sticking my head where most sensible people wouldn’t — playing professional rugby for Saracens, Bath and England — before moving into broadcasting, where thankfully the collisions are mostly verbal.

These days, I work across television, live events, commentary and podcasts, covering the biggest rugby tournaments and matches for broadcasters including ITV and TNT Sports. Whether it’s a Six Nations game, a Rugby World Cup night under the lights, or a wet Friday in Sale where nobody can feel their hands, I absolutely love trying to bring the sport to life for viewers.

My job is basically to explain what’s actually going on — especially in the scrum, which remains one of modern sport’s great unsolved mysteries — while hopefully making people laugh a bit along the way. I love the detail and technical side of rugby, but I also know nobody wants to hear a bloke disappear into coaching jargon for 80 minutes.

Whether I’m pitchside, in the studio, commentating live or hosting events, the aim’s always the same: talk about rugby with honesty, energy and a bit of personality. The game’s brilliant, chaotic, emotional and occasionally ridiculous — which is probably why I still can’t stay away from it.

Speaking & Events

’ve spent years talking about rugby to crowds, cameras & anyone else willing to listen. Whether it’s hosting, speaking or auctioneering, the aim’s simple: keep people entertained, keep the room lively and make sure nobody’s checking their watch halfway through dessert.

Over the years, through rugby, broadcasting & live events, I’ve had the chance to work with a wide range of brilliant brands & sponsors including Land Rover Defender, Kamado Joe, Somerset Grill, Banham, Field & Flower, Corston, Yeti, Mastercard, Waitrose, HSBC, Bremont, Ribeye Boats, Allied Tool Hire, Newlands, Ioshen Knives, Cad & The Dandy, Delamain Cognac & BLD BRO.

The important bit, for me anyway, is authenticity. People can spot forced advertising from a mile away, particularly in sport, so I’ve always believed the best partnerships are the ones that feel natural, entertaining & relevant to the audience. That might mean fronting a campaign, hosting branded content, appearing at live events, working across social media or simply helping brands connect with rugby supporters in a way that doesn’t make everyone cringe.

Having worked in professional sport, live television and media for years, I understand the balance between commercial value & keeping things human. The goal is always to create something engaging, memorable & useful for the brand, while still sounding like an actual person rather than a corporate voiceover.

Alongside broadcasting & live work, I also spend a fair amount of time writing about rugby - mainly for RugbyPass, covering everything from the modern game & player welfare to scrummaging, coaching, pressure, leadership & why rugby people are the way they are.

The pieces tend to be opinion-led, honest & occasionally a bit nostalgic, but always rooted in experience from playing professionally for years and then spending even longer talking about the sport on television and podcasts. Some articles are serious, some are lighter, & some are probably just me getting overly emotional about front-row play & large men running into each other at speed.

What I enjoy most about writing is having the space to go beyond quick television soundbites & properly explore the personalities, stories & realities inside professional rugby. Whether it’s analysing the modern game, reflecting on life as a player or trying to explain why rugby people think the way they do, the aim’s always the same: make it interesting, relatable & worth reading... Even if you don’t know the difference between a tighthead & a toaster.

Recent work has included long-form features & opinion pieces for RugbyPass, including articles on modern coaching, rugby culture, player welfare & the changing shape of the professional game.
