Things I Do

TV & Punditry

I spent years sticking my head where most sensible people wouldn’t — playing professional rugby for Saracens, Bath and England — before moving into broadcasting, where thankfully the collisions are mostly verbal.

These days, I work across television, live events, commentary and podcasts, covering the biggest rugby tournaments and matches for broadcasters including ITV and TNT Sports. Whether it’s a Six Nations game, a Rugby World Cup night under the lights, or a wet Friday in Sale where nobody can feel their hands, I absolutely love trying to bring the sport to life for viewers.

My job is basically to explain what’s actually going on — especially in the scrum, which remains one of modern sport’s great unsolved mysteries — while hopefully making people laugh a bit along the way. I love the detail and technical side of rugby, but I also know nobody wants to hear a bloke disappear into coaching jargon for 80 minutes.

Whether I’m pitchside, in the studio, commentating live or hosting events, the aim’s always the same: talk about rugby with honesty, energy and a bit of personality. The game’s brilliant, chaotic, emotional and occasionally ridiculous — which is probably why I still can’t stay away from it.
